“Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known.” - Oscar Wilde
All art is unique expression by an individual, but I feel that abstract art is the peak visual medium for the expression of individualism. There are styles within abstract art, of course, but those elements can be so minimal as to be practically unrecognizable. For instance, in my own work with ink on paper, I use the tools of calligraphy and am inspired by the look of Japanese and Chinese calligraphy. However, I do not read calligraphy, and I have not trained in calligraphy. I do not know any characters and do not have any expertise around how to hold the brushes or make marks in a particular way. I just have my way.
My vision of what I want to express on the paper with the same tools as a shihan of shodo (yeah, I had to look up those words, too) is uniquely mine. I am allowed to express what I want simply because I want to. I can search as far and wide as I like for inspiration to develop my vision. There are no hard rules about how to make abstract art. There are some guiding principles: balance, emphasis, rhythm/pattern, unity, variety, contrast, movement and surprise, individual voice, or soul. These principles inform the construction of an abstract artwork, but there is nothing to say they all have to be present in every piece.
Abstract art is a fantastic medium for expressing autonomy, for finding that deeper understanding of self, and sharing it with the world. It's important to acknowledge that not all people will appreciate your art, just as they won't appreciate you. But your art will resonate with someone, because while we are all unique individuals, we all have similarities. As I create art, I express parts of me which creates an opportunity for connection with like minded people when I share it. It's the most human thing.
